The identity and the relevant record

Get the name and professional role

Write down the person’s full name and the letters used for their professional role. Ask which state board licenses that role.

For a doctor, licence status and public discipline can be checked with the state medical board.

Public records vary by state; some states use separate boards for different types of physician.

Check the place where care is received

With telehealth, a video link, phone call or online form replaces a shared room for the care conversation.

The licensing information used here was checked on September 26, 2026.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) gives guidance on licences for online care.

HHS says the person treating you must meet the licence rules in the state where that person works.

Your side of the call matters too: they need a licence or legal permission covering your state during the appointment.

Tell the service where you plan to sit for the visit and mention any travel. Ask which licence or permission covers that state.

Read the record without turning it into a rating

A record with no public discipline does not establish how good the person treating you is.

Match the full name carefully. If the role is unfamiliar, ask which board holds the authoritative record before trying a different search.

Open “Read the source material” in the reading path. Its “Find a state’s medical board” link leads to the board for the relevant state and role.

What a check can settle

Confirm the identity and relevant public record, then return to the care questions.
